北京（ＣＮＮ） １４歳で工場へ働きに出た貧しい少女が、米不動産王ドナルド・トランプ氏や米映画監督スティーブン・スピルバーグ氏をしのぐほどの富豪に――。中国の不動産開発大手ＳＯＨＯ中国の最高経営責任者（ＣＥＯ）、張欣さん（４７）のたどった道は、中国経済自体の歩みと重なっている。
張さんの資産は３６億ドル（約３６００億円）。米経済誌フォーブスによれば、自力で財産を築いた女性の世界ランキングで７位に入っている。
北京市内の至る所で、ビルの壁面に「ＳＯＨＯ中国」のロゴを見かける。同社は北京の代表的なビルなど１８カ所のプロジェクトを手掛け、最近上海にも進出を果たした。北京に昨年完成したビルと現在建設中のビルはどちらも、イラク出身の有名女性建築家、ザハ・ハディドさんが設計した。
張さんは文化大革命が始まる直前に北京で生まれた。当時、張さんの両親のような知識層は「再教育」と称して農村部へ送られた。母親は張さんを連れて北京へ戻ったが、待っていたのは貧しくつらい生活だった。
「子どものころ、街はとても静かだった。車も店も電灯も機械もなく、人々は自転車で移動していた」と振り返る。
１４歳の時に母親とともに香港へ移り、おもちゃや衣料、電気製品の工場で働いた。「学歴も家柄もなく、土地の言葉である広東語も話せない。つらい日々だった」という。ロンドンへの片道切符と英語講座の費用を貯めるのに５年間かかった。
英国で奨学金を勝ち取って大学に入り、ケンブリッジの大学院に進んで経済学修士号を取得。ニューヨークで金融大手ゴールドマン・サックスに就職した。
ウォール街での快適な暮らしを手に入れた張さんだったが、しばらくして北京へ戻り、夫の潘石屹さんと出会ってＳＯＨＯ中国を設立する。「中国をどう変えていったらいいかという議論が盛んに交わされた時代。この国はまさに変化の時を迎えていた。私はそこに参加したいと思ったのです」――１９９５年創業の同社は、やがて中国で最大級の不動産開発企業となった。
